Jassen speaks of his early life in Palestine and New York. In 1928 his father became shammash and executive secretary to Rabbi Barusch at Herzl Conservative Congregation in Seattle. He describes classes in the synagogue. After Rabbi Shapiro and part of the congregation left, William Jassen served as the Herzl rabbi from 1930 to 1932, but joined Shapiro's congregation in 1934. Rev. Jassen returned to Herzl from 1940-42. Charles Jassen discusses Rabbi Philip Langh's arrival at Herzl and the innovations Langh brought to the congregation, including Friday night services. He speaks of various rabbis and prominent members of the congregation, including Rabbi Joseph Wagner. He also mentions Rabbi Solomon Wohlgelernter of Bikur Cholim. Jassen was active in Hillel at the University of Washington, and was awarded for his outstanding service to the organization.
